
Delfin continues giant-killing ways in AQ Prime chess

MANILA---On another testy day for the up-and-coming woodpushers as Joel Delfin continued to impress.
Delfin followed up his smashing upset win over International Master Barlo Nadera in the second round with another impressive draw over International Master Rolando Nolte in the third round in the 3rd AQ Prime Fide Standard Chess Open being held at the 2nd Floor Exhibit Area near the Medical Depot of Ayala Malls, Manila Bay, Diosdado Macapagal corner Aseana Avenue, Parañaque City on Sunday.
With the draw, Delfin boosted his chances with 2.5 points on two wins and one draw in this FIDE 9 Rounds Swiss System Standard event (90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment time control format) hosted by AQ Prime Entertainment CEO Atty. Aldwin Alegre with the champion getting the lion share of P50,000 plus trophy.
He was tied at fourth to nine spots with his fourth round opponent International Master Ronald Bancod, FIDE Master Mark Jay Bacojo, Alfredo Balquin Jr., Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo and National Master Ivan Travis Cu.
Bancod drew with Balquin Jr., Bacojo drew with Lorenzo while Cu outclassed Johnson Mancenido.
"It was a tough match against IM Barlo Nadera and IM Rolando Nolte" said the 32 years old Delfin, who brought down Arwin Chris Hernandez after 59 moves of Caro-Kann Defense in the first round.
Fondly called BNM (Blitz National Master) in the chess world because of his fast in shorter time controls and time pressure gain a 28 elo rating points.
FIDE Master Noel Dela Cruz defeated National Master Kim Kenneth Santos to grab a share of the lead after three rounds.
Dela Cruz improved his total to 3.0 points, the same output of International Master Paulo Bersamina and International Master Daniel Quizon.
Bersamina nipped Adrian Dela Cruz while Quizon toppled Woman International Master Marie Antoinette San Diego. -Marlon Bernardino-
