
Quezon City notches dominant back-to-back wins in PCAP SGM Wesley So chess cup

MANILA---THE Quezon City Simba's Tribe finally clinched their first back-to-back winning night in the 2023 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) dubbed as Super Grandmaster Wesley So Cup held thru Chess.com Platform on Saturday, October 7.
Quezon City pulled off one of the most impressive victories as they beat the Rizal Batch Towers, 11-10.
Meanwhile, the Simba's Tribe momentum didn’t stop there as they handed the Isabela Knights of Alexander another loss, 11-10, to cap off their PCAP sweep.
A win by former National Interbank Champion Danilo Ponay against National Master Elias Lao and a draw by National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. against Jonathan Jota in the rapid portion helped Quezon City into a 11-10 decision win against Rizal.
Grandmaster Darwin Laylo defeated International Master Richelieu Salcedo III, Manilyn Cabungcag toppled Kelly Ann David-Salcedo, Francis Talaboc defeated John Paul Aquino and Freddie Talaboc drew with Virgen Gil Ruaya.
Walt Allen Talan beat Joseph Navarro for Rizal's lone point in the rapid play.
Earlier, Rizal got momentum by beating Quezon City, 6-1, in the blitz portion.
Against Isabela, Ponay shocked National Master Geraldo Cabellon, Cabungcag crushed Diana Ramos-Banawa, Navarro waylaid Marvin Phua while Freddie outclassed Melchor Foronda in their rapid encounter.
Isabela edges Quezon City in blitz, 4-3.
"It was a thrilling match for Quezon City. Both losing in the blitz portion against Rizal and Isabela but came back in the rapid play to win the matches," said Samivin delos Santos, Co-Team Manager of Quezon City Simba's Tribe.
"2 Matches, 2 wins, congrats Team QC," added Dennis Alain Lladoc, Co-Team Manager of Quezon City Simba's Tribe.
Other member of Quezon City Simba's Tribe are Justin Corpin, Kristian Paulo Cristobal, NM Robert Arellano, NM Robert Suelo Jr. and Playing Team Captain Michaela Concio.
PCAP, the country’s first play-for-pay league, is headed by PCAP President Atty. Paul Elauria, chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua, PCAP treasurer Atty. Arnel Batungbakal and Technical Committee chairman Engr. Jojo Buenaventura and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Land, Buenaviel and PCWorx and sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Atty.
