MANILA---Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. will try to live up to his reputation as the country’s chess iron man as he spearheads the 200-player field in the GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Open Rapid Chess Tournament that gets underway on Saturday, September 30, 2023, 8:30am at the second floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.

The 13-time Philippine Open Champion Antonio will be aiming for another crown in the 7-round tournament sponsored by GM Balinas family, supported by Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rising Chess Unlimited and National Chess Federation of the Philippines Director Engr. Rey Urbiztondo that stakes a champion’s purse worth P10,000.

The 1-day, 10 minutes plus 5 seconds increment rapid time control format was held in honor of the 82nd Birthday and 25th Death Anniversary of GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. who is best remembered for winning the 1976 Odessa International.

"I hope to do well in this event and gain some elo rating points," said Antonio, one of the students of GM Balinas who is fresh from a runner-up finish in the just ended JMN Internet Installation Services Open Rapid Chess Tournament at the Nepo Farm in Tarlac City last September 24, 2023.

"It will be a tough 7 rounds rapid tournament," added Antonio, who just won the Iligan Diyandi Festival Individual Open Rapid Chess Tournament last September 15, 2023 held at the Robinsons Place Atrium in Iligan City.

International Master Daniel Quizon is also one of the players to watch out for along with IM Michael Concio Jr., IM Angelo Abundo Young, IM Rolando Nolte, IM Barlo Nadera and IM Ronald Bancod.
