MANILA---CAVITE Spartans made it 3 wins in a row in the 2023 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines-PCAP online chess tournament dubbed as Super Grandmaster Wesley So Cup, beating Rizal Batch Towers, 13.5-7.5, and Isabela Knights of Alexander, 10.5-10.5, 3-0, late Wednesday, September 27, 2023 held thru Chess.com Platform.

Coming from a rousing win vs the Cagayan Kings, 13-8, last September 23, the Cavite Spartans were hoping to replicate the same success vs the Rizal Batch Towers.

The Spartans cut down the Rizal Towers with a 4.5-2.5 edge in the Blitz section and secured the match win with a decisive 9-5 score with Rapid time controls.

Attempting a hat trick against the formidable Isabel Knights of Alexander initially seemed like a daunting challenge for the Cavite Spartans. While they held a 5.5-1.5 lead in Blitz and hoped to maintain their advantage, a determined comeback by the Isabela Knights of Alexander, winning 9-5 in Rapid, ultimately forced the match to be decided in an Armageddon showdown.

Ultimately the Spartans prevailed with three resilient wins by Anatoly Pascua, CM Jayson Visca and NM Louie Salvador vs the Isabela Knights composed of Lordwin Espiritu, Benjamin Lising and FM Steven Breckenridge.

Another Torre in the making in the Philippine chess.

Praise Torre, niece of Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, contributed a win versus Kelly Ann David-Salcedo of Rizal Batch Towers and Diana Ramos-Banawa of Isabela, both in the blitz portion.

“It was a good start for our new-look team,” said the 23-year- old Imus City resident Torre, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Aviation Electronics Technology at Philippine State College of Aeronautics, Main Campus in Pasay City.

AFM Melizah Carreon remained undefeated after crushing David-Salcedo and Ramos-Banawa in the rapid format.

Other members of the Cavite Spartans are IM Barlo Nadera, Renie Malupa, AGM Voltaire Marc Paragua, Ed Tunguia, Richard Cornell Manzano, Benjie Bercadez and NM Jose Rafael "Jojo" Legaspi.
Meanwhile, Manilyn Cabungcag is on fire as Quezon City Simba's Tribe claims the first win versus Manila Indios Bravos with a 13-8 score. Cabungcag, who hails from Bacolod City defeated Kristel Shayne Herrera, both blitz and rapid format.

Quezon City Simba's Tribe yielded to San Juan Predators, 16-5, and to defending champion Pasig King Pirates, 17.5-3.5.
Pasig, who beat Isabela Knights of Alexander, 14-7, in the opening round, toppled Laguna-PECA Executives, 12-9.

Thus, Pasig and Cavite share on top in the Northern Division with 3-0 clean slate.
