Cavite Spartans open 3rd Super Grandmaster Wesley So Cup with 13-8 decision vs the Cagayan Kings

MANILA---The Cavite Spartans scored a full point via a 13-8 decision vs the Cagayan Kings while parading new faces along with the old reliables at the start of Professional Chess Association of the Philippines -PCAP online chess tournament dubbed as 3rd Super Grandmaster Wesley So Cup thru Chess.com Platform on Saturday, September 23, 2023.

Speedster and top board Anatoly Pascua Jr. set the tone by blitzing his way to a win vs Ruther Barredo in the 1st game of the Blitz round.

Contributions also came from the analytical mastermind of FM Carlos Edgardo Garma who impressed with a win vs Jude Ulanday as well as a 3-0 rout by the trio of CM Jayson Visca, NM Carlo Magno Rosaupan and AGM Voltaire Marc Paraguya vs their homegrown counterparts from Cagayan in the likes of Alexander Jude Malabad, Laurence Wilfred Dumadag and Bencelle Fernandez, respectively.

The Cagayan Kings had their last resistance dashed in the Rapid section by key wins of FM Noel de la Cruz, IM Barlo Nadera and CM Visca versus NM Gerald Ferriol, Ulanday and Malabad, in order and a nail biting win with the Black pieces by AFM Melizah Ruth Carreon over AIM April Joy Ramos in Queen's Pawn Opening game.
Cavite Spartans defeated Cagayan Kings, 5-2, in blitz portion as well 8-6 in the rapid play.

PCAP, the country’s first play-for-pay league, is headed by PCAP President Atty. Paul Elauria, chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua, PCAP treasurer Atty. Arnel Batungbakal and Technical Committee chairman Engr. Jojo Buenaventura and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Land, Buenaviel and PCWorx and sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Atty.
