MANILA---International Master (IM) Joel Banawa is set to compete in the 10th edition of Kamatyas FIDE rated invitational rapid chess tournament dubbed as "David's Gambit" to be held on September 23 and 24 at the FL Dy Coliseum, Rizal Avenue in Cauayan City, Isabela.
IM Banawa aims to raise his rapid rating of 2378 to more than 2400 this year.
"I hope to do well in this 2-day Kamatyas FIDE rated invitational rapid chess tournament in Cauayan City, Isabela and gain some elo rating points," said the Alicia, Isabela resident IM Banawa.
The two-day National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) sanctioned tournament, supervised by the Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation (PACC) is hosted by International Master Roderick Nava and National Master David Almirol, both co-founding head of organizing Kamatyas Chess Club.
“The goal of the event is to help our young chess players here in Isabela in particular, and also in the Philippines in general. We want them to become globally competitive not just in this sport but also in their daily lives,” said IM Nava.
The 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment time control format will offer P30,000, P10,000, P7,000, P5,000 for the first, second third and fourth placers while the fifth to 10th placers will receive P2,000 each.
11th to 20th placers will earn P1,000 each while the 21st to 30th placers will receive P500 each.
P2,000 each awaits for the category winners such as top Non-Master, top Isabela, top Cauayan, top Senior, top Junior, top kiddies and top Lady.
It shall be recalled that IM Banawa won the Isabela Chess Club Inc. 1st FIDE Rated Chess Tournament last January 10 held in Alicia, Isabela.
The victory pushed Banawa’s tally to 6.0 points good for the winner’s trophy and the champion’s prize worth P15,000 awarded by Alicia Mayor Atty. Joel Amos P. Alejandro.-Marlon Bernardino-
