International Boxing Federation minimum weight champion Florante Condes leaves for Los Angeles today en route to La Paz, Mexico for his first title defense against mandatory challenger Raul ?Rayito? Garcia of Mexico.

The uncle of Condes, Larry Valencia told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that the champion would be in LA for five days and planned to work out at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach.

Condes will be accompanied by well-known promoter and boxing manager Sammy Gello-ani who along with international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz helped arrange the fight which would earn Condes a purse of $50,000. Gello-ani also looked after Condes during his training stint at the famed ALA Gym in Cebu.

On the eve of his departure, Condes continued his training under the watchful eye of Danny Bactol at a gym in Cainta. Since he broke away from his manager Aljoe Jaro, Condes has been living with his aunt Loy Valencia and her husband Larry in Cainta.

Bactol said he has been concentrating on the champion?s physical conditioning as well as his footwork and movement in the ring and was confident of Condes? chances mainly because of his awesome punching power for a minimum weight.

Valencia said Condes weighed around 108 pounds just three pounds over the minimum weight limit and indicated he would have no problems making the weight.

Following a courtesy call on Vice President Noli de Castro, Condes said he didn?t pay any attention to the statements of Garcia who said he was not afraid of the reputed punching power of Condes and that he had fought harder punchers before but was never knocked down. Condes added ?he (Garcia) can say what he likes but we will see each other in the ring and I will do everything I need to do to bring back the title.?
