Filipino chess wizard wins bronze medal at 7th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship - Standard U08 in Hainan, China

MANILA---A Filipino kid won a bronze medal at the 7th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship - Standard U08 in Changjiang Chess Bay, Hainan Province, China on Thursday, August 10.

Danry Seth Romualdez, a Grade 3 pupil of MGC New Life Christian Academy finished the 9-Round Swiss System tournament with 7.0 points on five wins and four draws.

The 8-year-old chess wizard scored victories over Tulga Lkhagvademchig of Mongolia in the first round, Dilixiati Bilali of China in the third round, Munkhjargal Munkh-Orgil of Mongolia in the fifth round, eventual winner Moxuan Bai of China in the sixth round and Beichen Zhang of China in the eight round.
He split the points with Tseesuren Tenuun of Mongolia in the second round, Tianwen Chen of China in the fourth round, Zhirui Zhang of China in the seventh round and Amarsaikhan Amarkhuu of Mongolia in the ninth and final round.

"I was so happy, excited, and thankful to God," said Danry Seth in an interview with this writer.

"Thank you po kay Coach Chris, MGC coaches, and Pasig Team Coaches. Thank you also sa NCFP and to all those who help me prepare for this tournament. Thank you din sa mga nag wish ng good luck and nag congratulate sakin," he added.

Moxuan Bai of China won the gold with 8.0 points after beating Haqqi Mohd Hatta of Malaysia in the last round while Tseesuren Tenuun of Mongolia took the silver with 7.5 points after crushing Lincoln Or of Hongkong.-Marlon Bernardino
