The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) through the leadership of Hon. Cong. Prospero A. Pichay Jr. has conferred the Woman National Master (WNM) Title to Millery Gen Watson Subia, a 10-year-old chess prodigy from Wesleyan University Philippine in Nueva Ecija last August 7, 2023.
She earned the title after winning the Gold Medal at the 21st ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships in June 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand, during which the Thailand Chess Association and ASEAN Chess Confederation also recognized her as a Woman Candidate Master (WCM).
Millery learned chess from her father AFM/Dr. Gener S. Subia last 2020 during the pandemic lockdown and started playing and winning competitive online tournaments hosted by ustralia, New Zealand and the Philippines.
Millery's mother, Apple, stated that "the hybrid and online chess tournaments greatly assisted in her daughter’s development during the lockdown. Thanks to the ongoing programs the NCFP has put in place, she has started showcasing her talent in Over the Board (OTB) competitions now that face-to-face tournaments are back. We are grateful to FST/GM Jayson Gonzales, IA Reden Cruz, WNM Venice Vicente, NI/NA Susan Grace Neri, NM Edmundo Gatus, and other NCFP Arbiters and staff for their support in helping the country's young chess prodigies.”
Millery’s short-term goals for the next two to three years, before she enters high school are to win the Palarong Pambansa title for elementary school girls, become a Woman FIDE Master (WFM), and bring another gold medal for her country in international age group competitions. She said, "I know that I am still young and that there are many things that I need to improve in my chess games, but I will continuously train hard to live up to my title and to bring honor to our nation."
The Subia family wishes to express their gratitude to all Filipino chess players, writers and streamers, the LGU & RTU of Nueva Ecija, N.E. Masonic Lodge No. 73, their WUP and SDO Cabanatuan City Family, the Nueva Ecija Chess Knights, Team Sadey, as well as their friends, sponsors and relatives.-Marlon Bernardino-
