MANILA---The RP Blu Girls begin their Women's Softball World Cup 2023 journey versus current world number 5 Canada at the Castions di Strada and Buttrio in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11 pm PH time.
The all-female Filipino team have spent the last month preparing for the World Cup and have formulated new strategies to give their opponents a run for their money.
Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL) President Jean Henri Lhuillier talked about the preparations involved in preparing the RP Blu Girls. "We were able to provide all the necessary support and enlist the help of the best coaches in the country so our RP Blu Girls can conquer the odds and make a strong finish at the World Cup".
The RP Blu Girls engaged in a practice match with fellow World Cup contenders Czech Republic (ranked 7) on Wednesday, July 19, where they ended up winning the scrimmage with a 5-4 record. This was done in preparation for their respective matches during the group stage of the tournament.
The team lineup is Glory Alonzo, Francesca Altomonte, Mary Ann Antolihao, Danica Aquino, Khrisha Genuary Cantor, Elise Dela Torre, Skylynne Ellazar, Ma. Angelu Gabriel, Nicole Adra Hammoude, Mary Joy Maguad, Ma. Celyn Ojare, Royevel Palma, Cristy Joy Roa, Ma. Charlotte Narces Sales, Alaiza Talisik, and Reyae Mae Villamin.
No less than 18 teams are seeing action in the World Cup, including the defending champion United States. It will be an uphill battle for the RP Blu Girls as they are grouped together with three-time champion Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Venezuela, and Italy.
Japan, Canada, and Italy are currently ranked 2nd, 5th, and 8th, respectively, at the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) World Rankings and are three of the six teams that made it to the Tokyo Olympics. The RP Blu Girls is currently ranked 26th.
To advance to the Top 8, the RP Blu Girls have to beat four teams and finish second in their group.-Marlon Bernardino-
