MANILA---National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. rules the 3rd IIEE (Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines) National Chess Mini-blitz chess tournament held at IIEE Building in Cubao Quezon City last July 6, 2023.
He bested Michael Suacillo of Meralco (Metro East team) in a 1 game armageddon for a tie break after a single round robin match.
Engr. Sucillo was the champion in the 2nd leg of the IIEE mini-tour held at the same venue last June 16, 2023.
Earlier, Bernardino scored victories over Hernan Tabuyan (Round 1), Julian Paul Querubin (Round 2), Rolly Clamor (Round 3), Arthur Maurera (Round 4), Allan Alvarez (Round 5) and Noel Jay Estacio (Round 6).
Bernardino split the point with Engr. Sucillo (Round 7) to arranged a titular showdown, in a 1 game armageddon for a tie break after a single round robin match.
During the Armageddon tie breaker, Bernardino handled the black pieces (four minutes) against Engr. Sucillo (white pieces with five minutes) needed only a draw to secure the title.
However, Bernardino prevailed in 40 moves because of his vast knowledge and experience in King's Indian defense.
"I am thankful because he (Michael Suacillo) chose to play the Queen's Pawn Opening (d4) and I am very prepared for the black pieces using the sharpline King's Indian defense," said Bernardino, founding president of Bayanihan Chess Club.
Bernardino, a certified online Arena Grandmaster and United States chess master, topped the Fide Master Anton Paolo Del Mundo Blitz Chess Open held at Tarrasch Knight Chess Club inside the Guadalupe Commercial Complex in Makati City last June 17, 2023.
The Hataw tabloid contributor and radio commentator covering chess and billiards once played for the Rizal Technological University team and also won a tournament in Arlington, Virginia, USA in 2005.
