
Pimentel, Young, Castellano, Martuna to see action in Ozamis Open chess

MANILA---International Master Joel Pimentel of Bacolod City will lead a crack list of top chess players who will see action in the Asenso Misamis Occidental National Open Chess Tournament which will run from July 8 to 9 at the AYA Hotel and Residences, Ozamis City, Misamis Occidental.
IM Pimentel will be joined by IM Angelo Abundo Young (Manila), Fide Master Christopher Castellano (Cainta, Rizal), NM Levi Martuna (Pagadian City), Arena Grandmaster Lyndon Lumancas (Cagayan de Oro City), Johnnel Balquin (Cagayan de Oro City) and Elvis Longjas (Dipolog City) and other tough players who have confirmed their participation in the P300,000 tournament sponsored by the provincial government headed by Governor Atty. Henry S. Oaminal Sr. in close cooperation with City Mayor Atty. Henry F. Oaminal Jr., Congressman Sancho Fernando F. Oaminal and the newly created Asenso Misamis Occidental Federated Chess Association in celebration of the 75th Charter Anniversary of Ozamiz City.
Organizers are expecting around 300 chess players to see action in the cash-rich event.
The Asenso Misamis Occidental National Open Chess Tournament is a nine-round Swiss System Open Tournament where each player will be given 15 minutes plus 2 seconds increment time control format with the champion getting P30,000 plus trophy. The second placer will receive P20,000 plus trophy while the third placer will get P15,000 and trophy.
Hall of Famer and Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre is set to play a simultaneous exhibition match on July 8.
A regional chess match is also set on July 8 for 20 boards as the Regional Champions Match between Region 10 and Region 9. Composed of 10 Boards Executives and 10 Boards Open Champions.
