MANILA---International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad will spearhead a strong cast clashing in the AQ Prime Stream FIDE Standard Open Chess Tournament set July 1 and 2 at the Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City.
The 66-year-old Bagamasbad looms as the player to beat in the six round System FIDE Standard tournament owing to his magnificent performance in the past.
The event, backed up by AQ Prime Proprietor/President Atty. Aldwin Alegre under the auspices of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, offers a top purse of P10,000.
It shall be recalled that Bagamasbad proves that age is just a number after bagging the gold medal in the Asian Senior Chess Championships 2022 held at Auckland Rose Park Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand from Oct. 14 to 22.
With a score of 7.5/9 points, Bagamasbad took the first place in the Over 65 category plus an outright International Master title and Grandmaster norms.
Bagamasbad also snatched third place in the Merv Morrison Memorial 2022 Open, a six-round chess tournament that took place from Oct. 22 to 24 at the Auckland Chess Centre.
“Victory doesn't depend on your age, it's on your move. If you need a good move, you need training. Training doesn't depend on the coach, it doesn't depend on the teacher, it's on the player,” said Bagamasbad.
This is the first Standard tournament for Bagamasbad who had a cataract removal.
"This is my first Standard tournament after a cataract removal. Last March 11 yung right eye then April 17 yung left eye," he added.
Other IMs vying are Angelo Abundo Young, Chito Garma, Ricardo de Guzman, Barlo Nadera, Ronald Bancod, Chris Ramayrat, Woman International Master Marie Antoinette San Diego, Fide Masters Christian Mark Daluz, Noel dela Cruz and Adrian Ros Pacis, among others.
The AQ Prime Stream FIDE Standard Open Chess Tournament has two divisions which offer P10,000 each for the champion.
The 2001 to 2399 FIDE Standard rating and 2000 and below.
Bagamasbad is also set to compete in the Grandmaster Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Open Chess Tournament on September 30, 2023 at the second floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.
Bagamasbad will embark on a series of international competitions, starting with the 18th IGB Malaysian Chess Festival 2023 scheduled from August 25 to September 3 in Cititel Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Bagamasbad is also set to compete in FIDE World Senior Championships 2023 in Terrasini, Italy, from October 24 to November 6, and the Penang Open this December 18-24 in Penang, Malaysia.
He needs two more GM norms to complete his GM title status.-Marlon Bernardino-
