MANILA, Philippines – Angelo Abundo Young is set to embark on a journey to become the next Filipino Grandmaster Master.
The Tondo, Manila International Master is focusing to secure GM norms by playing in more overseas tournaments against highly rated chess players.

“We all know how difficult it is to become a GM. But with the support of my family, my friends and sponsors, I can reach my dream,” said Young, an 8-time Illinois, USA chess champion.

"I will do my very best for flag and country," added Young, head coach of Emilio Aguinaldo College Chess Team under the guidance of EAC Vice President for Administration Dr. Lorenzo C. Lorenzo.

Young will embark on a series of international competitions, starting with the 18th IGB Malaysian Chess Festival 2023 scheduled from August 25 to September 3 in Cititel Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Young is also set to compete in FIDE World Senior Championships 2023 in Terrasini, Italy, from October 24 to November 6, and the Penang Open this December 18-24 in Penang, Malaysia.

During the 2019 World Senior Chess Championships (in the +50 division) in Bucharest, Romania, Young, seeded 31st among 138 participants, ended up tied for fifth place alongside 12 others with 7.5 points apiece but wound up eighth overall after the tiebreaks were applied in the tournament topped by Ukrainian GM Vadim Shishkin.

The tournament will feature top-rated players from all over the world from Russia, America, Europe, China, Vietnam, and the Middle East players.

Young is fresh from winning the blitz event of Canon Carlsen Kasparov FIDE Blitz Open Chess Tournament last June 11 was held at the Robinsons Place, General Trias City, Cavite.
Young also got the second place honors in the Canon Carlsen Kasparov FIDE Standard Open Chess Tournament won by National Master Giovanni Mejia.

In the 1st Sipocot Mayor Cup Open in Sipocot, Camarines Sur last June 17 to 18, Young placed third over-all behind tournament champion Recarte Tiauson and runner-up place Fide Master David Elorta.

Before the series of international competitions, Young is set to compete in the AQ Prime Stream FIDE Standard Open Chess Tournament on July 1 and 2 at the Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City and the "Asenso Misamis Occidental National Open" scheduled on July 8-9 at the Ozamiz City auditorium.-Marlon Bernardino-
