MAKATI CITY---National Master and Unites States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. pocketed the top honors in the Fide Master Anton Paolo C. Del Mundo Blitz Open Chess Tournament held at the Tarrasch Knight Chess Club, Guadalupe Commercial Complex, Makati City last Saturday, June 17, 2023.
The 45-year-old Bernardino, , an employee of the Philippine Racing Commission (PHILRACOM) under the guidance of chairman Reli de Leon collected six points on four wins and two draws to win the six-round tournament using five minutes plus two seconds increment time control format and bagged the top prize of P700, chess book plus a trophy.
Bernardino, founding president of Bayanihan Chess Club scored victories over Benjie Bercadez in the first round, Rommel Lucion in the second round, Christian Mendoza in the third round and Candidate Master Genghis Imperial in the fifth round.
He drew with National Master Nicomedes Alisangco in the fourth round and Cedrick Eduardo Lacanlale in the sixth and final round.
"I knew that this was a tough tournament. I just tried to play my best and now I am really happy," said Bernardino, a 1999 Rakan Muda Grand Asian Chess Challenge Inter-Collegiate bronze medallist in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the 2005 Arlington Virginia, USA Champion.
The former Rizal Technological University chess team standout Bernardino is a veteran sports writer and radio commentator who always cover chess and billiards event.
The 1 day blitz open chess tournament was backed up by Fide Master Anton Paolo C. Del Mundo Blitz in close cooperation with New York, US based Mr. Nonoy Rafael, Rene Mijares Sr., Mr. Jojo Arabejo, Mr. Andrew Elpedes and Mr. Richard Poblete-Ramos of Eurobake Restaurant - Bakeshop.-Marlon Bernardino-
