MANILA---International Master Angelo Abundo Young ruled the Canon Carlsen Kasparov FIDE Blitz Open Chess Tournament at the Robinsons Place, General Trias City, Cavite on Sunday, June 11, 2023.

Young, an 8-time Illinois, USA chess champion, scored victories over Rhys Dylan Batara in the first round, Ariel Santander in the second round, Jerish John Velarde in the third round, Arnel Ellis in the fourth round and Woman Fide Master Allaney Jia G iDoroy in the fifth and final round.

Young figured in a triple tie with Fide Master Christian Mark Daluz and Woman International Master Kylen Joy Mordido with similar perfect 5.0 points but Young settled for the top honors by virtue of a higher tie-breaker. Daluz settled for second while Mordido end up third.

"I am happy for winning the Canon Carlsen Kasparov FIDE Blitz Open Chess Tournament. I wish that my luck would remain the same with my upcoming stint in the AQ Prime FIDE Standard Open Chess Tournament on July 1 and 2," said Young, Head Coach of Emilio Aguinaldo College Chess Team under the guidance of EAC Vice President for Administration Dr. Lorenzo C. Lorenzo.
Young also got the second place honors in the Canon Carlsen Kasparov FIDE Standard Open Chess Tournament won by National Master Giovanni Mejia.

Young is set to compete in tournaments abroad to accomplish his bid to become the country's next Grandmaster Master (GM).
He is slated to compete in the World Senior Chess Championships to be held on October 24 to November 6 at Terrasini, Sicily, about an hour north-west of Palermo, Italy.

During the 2019 World Senior Chess Championships (in the +50 division) in Bucharest, Romania, Young, seeded 31st among 138 participants, ended up tied for fifth place alongside 12 others with 7.5 points apiece but wound up eighth overall after the tiebreaks were applied in the tournament topped by Ukrainian GM Vadim Shishkin.-Marlon Bernardino-
