Suelo, Abelgas, Castellano, Infiesto off to good start in Malaysia

PENANG, MALAYSIA---Filipino FIDE Masters Robert Suelo Jr., Roel Abelgas and Christopher Castellano and National Master James Infiesto got off to a blazing start by posting back to back victories in the second round of the 3rd Mini Penang Chess Open 2023 on Monday at the Methodist Boys School ACS Union, George Town here in Penang, Malaysia.

Suelo defeated Cheryl A. Angot and Pin Xie Loo of Malaysia, Abelgas subdued Ree Herng Shen of Malaysia and Felix Aguilera, Castellano routed Nadya Deandra Wirawan and Steven Tan of Indonesia and Infiesto dealt Wei Shen Yeoh and Austin Weibin Cheah of Malaysia.

“The first two rounds are some of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you’re going to perform,” said Suelo, 1996 Philippine Junior Champion.

"We hope to perform well in this event and gain some ElO rating points," Abelgas said for his part.

NM Darry Bernardo and Menandro Redor also opened with back-to-back wins.

Bernardo crushed Yi Feng Peh of Malaysia and Paul S. Eggers of the USA while Redor nipped Shawn Alamsyah of Malaysia and Atty. Cheyzer Crystal J. Mendoza.

Also with perfect 2.0 points are top seed IM Pavel Shkapenko and FM Danil Najdin of Russia, FM Poh Yu Tian, WCM Sim Jia Ru , Looi Xin Hao and Yeoh Yuan Hui of Malaysia.
