MANILA---Laguna Dasmariñas took down the resilient Magic Mandaluyong Tigers and clinched the 2023 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Northern division finals seat.

Fresh off a win against Rizal Batch Towers during the quarterfinal stage, the Laguna Dasmariñas continued its dominant PCAP run and bested Mandaluyong, 11.5-9.5, 10.5-10.5, 3-0, semi finals late Saturday to reach the Northern Division final round held virtually via Chess.com platform.

The Laguna Dasmariñas swept Mandaluyong, who forced Armageddon play, after notching up Game Two in the north division semis.

"Our matches against Magic Mandaluyong Tigers were really both heart-stopping. The 1st match was close and the 2nd match was tied at 10.5-10.5. I really appreciate GM Banjo (Barcenilla), IM Daniel (Quizon) and IM Jako (Concio) for keeping their composure in the armageddon."said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Alfredo "Fred" Paez, one of the four owners of Laguna-Dasmariñas.

The other owners of the team are David Nithyananthan, Engr. Billy Joe Ereňo and Engr. Benjamin Dy.

The team, also supported by Cavite Fourth District Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr.,took Game One, 11.5-9.5. The Magic Mandaluyong Tigers, fighting for their playoff lives, forced a 10.5-10.5 draw in Game Two for extra play, which, had they won, would have gone into another Armageddon match.

In the shootout, International Master Daniel Quizon, Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. and International Master Michael Concio Jr. swept Fide Master Deniel Causo, Grandmaster Darwin Laylo and Paul Sanchez, 3-0.

Laguna-Dasmariñas will face on Wednesday the Pasig King Pirates, which escaped with a close victory over the San Juan Predators on Saturday.

Pasig defeated San Juan, 11-10, in Game One.

San Juan bounced back in Game Two, 13.5-7.5, to force Armageddon.
Once in extra play, the Pasig King Pirates' Kevin Arquero and International Master Eric Labog Jr. defeated Karl Victor Ochoa and International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia for the 2-1 victory. Only San Juan’s International Master Paulo Bersamina shone for the Predators with his win over Grandmaster Mark Paragua.

"We are happy for beating San Juan Predators. We are hoping that Pasig King Pirates will continue their fine performance as we are facing Laguna-Dasmariñas for the Northern Division finals," said Pasig King Pirates Coach Franco Camillo.

Also advancing in the next round are the Negros Kingsmen and Davao Chess Eagles in the Southern Division finale. Negros eliminated Iloilo Kisela Knights while Davao ousted Camarines-Iriga.-Marlon Bernardino-
