Philippine Para chess team to compete in Penang, Malaysia

The Philippine Paralympic Chess Team is set to participate in the 3rd Mini Penang Chess Open 2023, which will be held on April 24 to 28, 2023, at the Methodist Boys School ACS Union in Penang, Malaysia.

The Philippine Paralympic Chess Team is scheduled to leave the country on Saturday at 12:50 pm via Malaysian Airlines.
Anchoring the squad are the powerhouse of current IPCA Online Chess World Champion FIDE Master Sander Severino, National Master Darry Bernardo, National Master Henry Roger Lopez and Atty. Cheyzer Crystal Mendoza, who towed Team Philippines to a third place finish in the FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities held at the Belgrade's Crown Plaza Hotel in Belgrade, Serbia last February.

Not to be outdone is Francis Ching who won the bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Para Games and Arman Subaste, who won a gold and two bronze medals in the 2018 Asian Para Games.

“They are here to soak in the experience as the national team prepares for the 12th ASEAN Para Games to be held on June 3 to 9 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia," pointed out Philippine Paralympic Chess Team Head Coach IA James Infiesto.

“Our athletes have been through a lot and this has made them mentally tougher. They understand the challenges of participating in the 3rd Mini Penang Chess Open 2023, which will be held on April 24 to 28, 2023, at the Methodist Boys School ACS Union in Penang, Malaysia," summed up Infiesto.

"We would like to thank Penang Chess Association President Atty. See Swee Sie and InHooi Teh for inviting us to participate in this prestigious FIDE rated event," last word of Infiesto.

Rounding out the Philippine Para Chess Team are Anthony Abogado, Felix Aguilera, Maria Teresa and Cecilio Bilog, Evangeline Gamao, Corazon Lucero, Ma. Katrina Mangawang, Fe Mangyayam, Jean-Lee Nacita, Elena and Israel Peligro, Menandro Redor, Rodolfo Sarmiento, Charmaine Tonic, assistant coaches FM Roel Abelgas and Saul Severino and Training Assistant Paul John Lauron.

The Philippine Paralympic Chess Team campaign is supported by PSC chairman Richard Bachmann, commissioner Walter Torres and Bong Coo, Philspada/NPC-Philippines President Michael Barredo and Marketing Director Goody Custodio, Mam Irene Soriano and Rowena Bautista in cooperation with Penang Chess Association President Atty.
