MANILA---After winning the Mayor Darel Dexter T. Uy National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Finals Under 18 Boys division (co-champion) last April 9 in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, National Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca is set to compete in the 21st ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championship in Bangkok, Thailand to be held on June 17 to 27, 2023.
The 14-year-old Arca, a Grade 8 student of Dasmariñas Integrated High School, aims to raise his rating to 2100 to complete his Fide Master title.
To date, Arca’s live rating is 2072.
He earned 94 FIDE Standard rating after winning the Mayor Darel Dexter T. Uy National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Finals Under 18 Boys division.
"I hope to do well in this event (Thailand) and gain some elo rating points," said Arca, who hails from Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
It was another feather in the cap for Arca, who topped the semis edition of this same age class last month, the boy’s U14 section of the Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championship in Bangkok, Thailand and the GM Balinas youth tilt last year. These feats reinforced notion that he will be lead piece for the country future in the sport.
Arca's local and international tournaments are being supported by Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., Mayor Jenny Barzaga and Sir Jessie Villasin. Arca is expected to lead the Philippine chess team in the 21st ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championship in Bangkok, Thailand to be held on June 17 to 27, 2023.
