MANILA, Philippines – Inaugural champion Sherwin Tiu will spearhead a strong cast clashing in the Chess Infinitum Invitational Rapid Tournament 4th Edition at the SM Sucat Building B in Paranaque City on Sunday, April 9, 2023.
Tiu looms as the player to beat in the 7-round Swiss system tournament owing to his impressive showing in the first edition.
The 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment time control format, backed up by Cebu chess patron Boojie Lim, organized by International Master Roderick Nava of Kamatyas Chess Club, offers a top purse of P15,000.
Also seeing action are defending champion Rowel Roque, Richard dela Cruz, Eduardo Campos Jr., Arvin Betonio, Edwin Caballero, Ryan Recososa, Darwin Secorata, Rommel Lucion and Jerome Angelo Aragones.
Other woodpushers vying in the event are IM Barlo Nadera, WIM Kylen Joy Mordido, Chester and Mark Gerald Reyes, Freddie and Francis Talaboc, Julian Paul and Jericho Ivan Querubin, Marlon and Alcomedes Constantino, Arjoe and Michelle Loanzon, Jefferson Pascua, Jalbert Vilan, Robvy Jemuel Wong, Kurt William Daantos and Richie Jocson.
"Infinitum, a variation of chess game created by Cebu chess patron Boojie Lim back in the early 2000, uses a semi 10 x 10 board and standard chess pieces and uses only six pawns with an additional piece called the wizard on each side," said IM Nava.
"Cebu chess patron Boojie Lim, former director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and chief executive of Rose Pharmacy Inc., brought back the game for the new generation of players as well as those who have grown to love his invention," he added.-Marlon Bernardino-
