Medina wins 1st South Luzon Fide-Rated Chess Tournament

MANILA---Vince Angelo Medina of Cabuyao City made his presence felt by winning the 1st South Luzon Fide-Rated Chess Tournament last Sunday, March 12 at the Centro Mall in Cabuyao City, Laguna.

Medina won the P5,000 champion’s prize after finishing solo at the top with 6.5 points in the 7-Round Swiss System tournament organized by the Philippine Executive Chess Association in close cooperation with Laguna Chess Association and Tabuko Chess Club.The event attracted 81 chess players.

Nazario Ubanan of Cagayan de Oro City, the player who figured to a draw with Medina, finished second with 6.0 points and earned P3,000.

Also with 6.0 points were third Gary Legaspi of Santa Rosa City, Laguna, fourth Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo of Calamba City and fifth NM Jasper Faeldonia of Manila.

Rounding up to the top 10 with 5.0 points each were sixth Apollo Agapay, seventh eight Jersey Marticio, eight Richard Haiden Alarma, ninth Ritchie Jocson and tenth Mikhail Laogan.

Medina opened his campaign with a win over David Kiel Briones in the opening round, then beat Michael Michio Dela Cruz in Round 2, nipped Edmund Daluddung in Round 3, subdued Gary Legaspi in Round 4, trounced Apollo Agapay in Round 5, waylaid Francis Talaboc in Round 6 before earning a draw with Nazario Ubanan in Round 7.
