TV actor Jao Mapa to play in Balinas chess

MANILA---An added attraction will be TV actor and chess enthusiast Jao Mapa who will match his skills against some of the country's top woodpushers when the 2023 Balinas Open Rapid Chess Tournament gets underway on March 18, 9 am at the second floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell, Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.

Fans can look forward to seeing again Jao not in the big screen but competing in the 64 square board.

Jao is best known for his Pepsi-Cola advertisement. He started a modeling career in the late 1990s, and co-hosted television variety shows like Eat Bulaga and ASAP. He first starred in the movie 'Pare Ko' in 1995, and left showbusiness in 2000 to study art.

"It's an honor to play in the prestigious 2023 Balinas Open Rapid Chess Tournament on March 18," said Jao, a well known painter.

“This is a big opportunity for the young chessers to see their idols in person and hopefully it will inspire them to get into sports,” Jao referring the participation of Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., Grandmaster Darwin Laylo and lone Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna among others.

The 105,000 PHP total pot prizes tournament is presented by Balinas Family in close cooperation with Mam China Aurelio and Mam Mimi Casas of Open Kitchen Foodhall, Hongkong national chess player Sunny Lo, Thailand based coach NM Gerald Ferriol and Richard Poblete-Ramos of Eurobake and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and rated by the World Chess Federation.
