Marticio wins National Age Group Chess tilt

TAGAYTAY CITY---Jersey Marticio of Cabuyao City, Laguna topped the girls’ 16-under division to lead 79 other qualifiers to the Nationals Finals in the Vice Governor Athena Bryana D. Tolentino National Age Group Chess Championships Eliminations at the Tagaytay International Convention Center on Sunday, March 5.

Marticio, a 15-year-old Pulo National High School student, finished with 5.5 points, a half-point ahead of Sara Dalagan of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, Daren dela Cruz of Dasmariñas City, Cavite, Kate Nicole Ordizo of Alaminos City, Pangasinan and Arleah Cassandra Sapuan of Valencia, Negros Oriental, who likewise advanced by finishing in the top eight with five points apiece.

"It’s been an uphill battle for me but my nerves somehow held and I was able to make it," said Marticio, a product of the grassroots chess program of Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) president Dr. Fred Paez.

Also making it to the Grand finals set next month are Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte are Maryss Annxeniel Caldoza of Imus City, Cavite (4.5 pts.), Antonella Berthe Racasa of Mandaluyong City (4.5 pts.), and Yaneah Sofia Morada of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (4.0 pts.).

WNM Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Santa Rosa City, Laguna also made it through by reigning supreme in the girls’ 14-under section with 6.5 points apiece. Jirah Floravie Cutiyog of General Trias City, Cavite finished second with 5.5 points, and also made the cut along with Bonjour Fille Suyamin of General Trias City, Cavite, who finished third with 5.0 points in this event sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by Chairman and President Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. draws the participation of 360 young wood pushers, the cream of the crop of young chessers from the different parts of the country with the tournament director, FST/GM Jayson Gonzales.
Other qualifiers are Daniella Bianca Cruz of Malolos City, Bulacan (4.5 pts.), Anica Shey Dimatangihan of Santa Rosa City, Laguna (4.0 pts.), Elvira Joy Jaen of Bacoor City, Cavite (4.0 pts.), Lila Alyssa Serina of Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental (4.0 pts.) and Hannah Jillian Luminario of Imus City, Cavite (3.5 pts.).

Among those who topped their sections and who also qualified were Mary Janelle Tan of Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis, Oriental (U-10 Girls), Zhaoyu Capilitan of Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis, Oriental (U-12 Girls), and Franchesca Largo of Santa Rosa City, Laguna (U-18 Girls)
