
WGM Frayna player to beat in Balinas chess tilt

MANILA---WOMAN Grandmaster (WGM) Janelle Mae Frayna opens up her campaign as the 2023 Balinas Open Rapid Chess Tournament presented by Balinas family gets underway on March 18, 9 am the second floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell, Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.
Frayna, one of the top players of the mutil-titled Philippine Army chess team looms as the early favorite to reign supreme anew, having won numerous chess tournaments in the past. It will be a 7-round Swiss system tournament. The time control is 10 minutes plus five seconds increment format.
At stake is a total cash purse worth 105,000 PHP with the lion’s share of 20,000 PHP going to the champion and 5,000 PHP to the top PECA executive winner courtesy of Balinas family in close cooperation with Mam China Aurelio and Mam Mimi Casas of the Open Kitchen food hall, Hongkong-national chess player Sunny Lo and Thailand-based NM coach Gerald Ferriol. The event will coincide with the birthday celebration of the late father, GM Rosendo Balinas Jr., and GM Rogelio Antonio Jr.
Approximately, 200 woodpushers from the Metropolis and nearby provinces are expected by the organizers (Bayanihan Chess Club) to rub elbows and match wits for this one-day tournament, which is rated by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by chairman/president Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr.
Expected to give Frayna a run for her money are fellow Olympiad veterans Grandmasters Joey Antonio Jr. and Darwin Laylo and International Masters Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Paulo Bersamina.
Also in the fold are International Masters Daniel Quizon, Michael Concio Jr., Angelo Young, Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Ronald Dableo, Barlo Nadera, Rolando Nolte and Ronald Bancod with Bayanihan Chess Club founding president NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. as tournament director and Ranier Pascual as chief arbiter.
