MANILA--- International Master Daniel Quizon of the Philippines overwhelmed top seed GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia in attempt to keep his chances for his title hunt for Grandmaster norm alive with one round left in the AQ Prime ASEAN Chess Championship at the Great Eastern Hotel (formerly Abeerden Court) in Quezon Avenue, Quezon City Friday, Feb. 17.
Quizon pounced on his Indonesian rival in 72 moves of a Center Counter Defense to extract a full point and catapult him into joint first with compatriot IM Paulo Bersamina with similar 6.5 points.
Bersamina slightly improved following a 41-move victory with countryman IM Rolando Nolte.
The win put Quizon and Bersamina half point ahead behind Megaranto who remains at six points. If the 19-year-old Quizon, who clashes with Nolte in the final round at press time, ends up ruling this tournament, he will clinch the second of the three results required to be a full-fledged GM.
"I believe that I am close to reaching my ultimate goal tomorrow (Saturday)," said Quizon.
"Megaranto essayed the Scandanavian defense against Quizon's 1.e4 who went for 5th Bc4 line. Quizon went for an early Nh4 which forced Megaranto's light-squared bishop to be enclosed by his own pawns after his 13th move f5. Megaranto missed his chance to swap his bad bishop on f3 on the 16th move but instead hurried to castle queenside. This allowed Quizon to plan a powerful knight on e5. After some maneuvering, the game took a twist when black sharpened up tactics with (...Nc5) on his 40th move. A possible slip might have happened on the 44th move where Megaranto decided to lash out with 44th move (...b5) after Quizon's 46th move black's pawn structure is shattered. An immense build up of mounting pressure against black's c6 weakness ensued which culminated on Quizon's brilliant 53rd move leading to Megaranto's capitulation 19 moves later. Kudos to our very own prodigy IM Daniel Quizon!" said National Trainor and Candelaria, Zambales resident Glenn Hullana Garcia who followed the game online thru www.chessbomb.com.
Meanwhile, Grandmaster John Paul Gomez of the Philippines drew with Grandmaster Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam after 24 moves of English Opening to share of fourth spot with IM Mohamad Ervan of Indonesia, who agreed a draw with IM Li Tian Yeoh of Malaysia after 29 moves of a Ruy Lopez Opening.
Gomez and Ervan, both tallied 5.5 points apiece after round 10 in this event organized by IM Roderick Nava of the Kamatyas Chess Club, sponsored by AQ Prime Proprietor/President Atty. Aldwin Alegre.
Grandmaster Darwin Laylo split the points with CM Khuong Duy Dau of Vietnam after 30 moves of a Scandinavian defense to climbed at 6th to 8th places with Yeoh and IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Indonesia, winner over FM Prin Laohawirapap of Thailand after 51 moves of French defense.
Laylo, Yeoh and Taher notch 5.0 points each followed by Van Huy (4.5 pts.), Dau (4.0 pts.), Nolte (3.5 pts.) and Laohawirapap (3.0 pts.).-Marlon Bernardino-
