MANILA---Filipino International Master (IM) Rolando Nolte needs to score 5.5 points in the last 7 games of the on going AQ Prime ASEAN Chess Championship in Quezon City in order to earn the second grand master (GM) norm of his career.
Nolte is set to face 6th seed Grandmaster Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam Tuesday at the Great Eastern Hotel (formerly Aberdeen Court), Quezon Avenue in Quezon City.
Nolte, seeded 11th in the event, halved the point with countryman 5th-seeded GM John Paul Gomez after 14 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening in the fourth round Monday.
He now shares the first to second places with 3.0 points on account of two wins and two draws in four outings, the same output of top seed Grandmaster Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia, who brought down Van Huy after 67 moves of Catalan Opening.
"Draw is okay to preserve my energy in the last 7 remaining games," said Nolte.
Nolte, who holds an ELO rating of 2375, tallied an impressive rating performance of 2519.
Nolte got his first GM norm in the 2008 Kolkata Open in Kolkata, India. The former University of Manila standout already reach the 2500 mark.
GM Darwin Laylo and IM Paulo Bersamina are still fighting for better places after splitting the points with their respective foreign foes.
Laylo drew with IM Li Tian Yeoh of Malaysia after 61 moves of Petroff defense and so did Bersamina against IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Indonesia after 36 moves of Modern defense.
They now moved on to a tie for the 3rd to 6th places with 2.5 points along with Gomez and Yeoh.
IM Daniel Quizon, meanwhile, is in joint 7th to 11th places with 1.5 points together with Van Huy, Taher, International Master Mohamad Ervan of Indonesia and Fide Master Prin Laohawirapap of Thailand while Candidate Master Dau Khuong Duy of Vietnam remains at last place with 0.5 point.
In other Round 4 results, Quizon drew with Duy after 40 moves of Sicilian defense, while Laohawirapap toppled Ervan after 64 moves of Sicilian defense.
The Champion of this event will have a chance to acquire an IM Title and GM Norm according to International Master Roderick Nava of Kamatyas Chess Club.
The week-long FIDE rated tournament is supported by AQ Prime Proprietor/President Atty. Aldwin Alegre, in close cooperation with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the ASEAN Chess Confederation, organized by Kamatyas Chess Club.-Marlon Bernardino-
