MANILA---Five veteran Filipino masters will spearhead the country’s campaign in the AQ Prime ASEAN Chess Championship (Standard Time Control, Invitational) beginning today, Saturday (February 11) at the Great Eastern Hotel, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.
Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez banners the strong Philippine squad along with GM Darwin Laylo, International Masters (IMs) Paulo Bersamina, Daniel Quizon and Rolando Nolte.
With an Elo rating of 2474, Gomez will be the highest-rated Filipino in the fold.
"I will do my very best, for flag and country," said the Binan, Laguna native Gomez.
Laylo (2433), on the other hand, isn’t intimidated by higher-rated foreigners, having ruled the Philippine National Chess Championship Grand Finals held in Malolos City Hall, Bulacan last February 6.
"I hope to do well in this event," said Laylo, a mainstay of the PCAP's Magic Mandaluyong Tigers team playing under the guidance of Atty. Nikki De Vega and Atty. Krisanto Karlo Nicolas.
"The Champion of this event will have a chance to acquire an IM Title and GM Norm," said Tournament Director International Roderick Nava of Kamatyas Chess Club.
Also seeing action in the event which offers 2,000 US dollar to the champion and hosted by AQ Prime Proprietor/President Atty. Aldwin Alegre are GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia, IM Li Tian Yeoh of Malaysia, IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher of Indonesia, IM Mohamad Ervan of Indonesia, GM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam, FM Prin Laohawirapap of Thailand and CM Dau Khuong Duy of Vietnam.
Apart from Alegre and Nava, expected to grace the opener are Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, National Chess Federation of the Philippines chairman/president Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. and chief executive officer GM Jayson Gonzales.-Marlon Bernardino-
