Asuela, Mercado, Retanal face tough competition in Rodriguez chess

MANILA---Fide Master Ellan Asuela of Bacolod City, National Master Levi Mercado of Cagayan de Oro City and 1997 Philippine Junior Champion National Master Elwin Retanal of Carcar, Cebu expect rough sailing in the 4th Congressman Rufus Rodriguez and 1st Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez chess tournament to be held on January 28 to 29, 9 am at the Barangay Nazareth Gym, Cagayan de Oro City.

"We do this to promote chess in the grassroots level and to discover future chess talents and champions," said Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Chess Association (CMOCA) president Father Vic Arellano.

“It will be a very tough match against the Mindanao players. Not to be outdone are players from the Luzon and Visayas,” said Asuela, who is fresh from winning the Kasparov Chess Foundation Asia-Pacific (KCFAP) Absolute Challenge last Dec. 23-25 at the Peace Centre in Singapore. Asuela earned 2,000 Singapore dollars for the victory.

Other woodpushers joining the competition backed up by Congressman Rufus Rodriguez and Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez are Bobby Salomon, Benoni and Napthali Wabe, Jun Gunayan, Romeo and Ronald Canino, Aljie Cantonjos, Bryan Jose, Ruther Barredo, Jonathan Docot, Harison Maamo, Jaime Joshua Frias II, Randolph Dalauta, Johnnel Balquin, Basilio Pandan, Jeriel Manlimbana, Rodney Opada, Clement Valledor and Keith Adriane Ilar.

The champion in the Individual Open division will bring home P10,000 plus trophy while the winners in the under 14 category will receive a P2,000 and a trophy.
