PH bet Rocky Pabalan rules Sharjah Blitz Chess Championship

MANILA---Filipino Rocky Pabalan dominated the Sharjah Blitz Chess Championship dubbed as 1st Friendship Chess Tournament 2022 held at the Sharjah Cultural & Chess Club in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates last Dec. 18.

The Bacolod City native Pabalan scored 7 points on 7 wins to rule the 7-round tournament, five minutes plus three seconds increment time control format.

Pabalan scored victories over Al Tarabichi Hamza of UAE in the first round, Samer Alshami of Syria in the second round, Jasper Selvin Jayaseelan of India in the third round, Essa Khamis Saqar of UAE in the fourth round, Suresh K K of India in the fifth round, Raji Abuazizah of Palestine in the sixth round and Grandmaster Mert Erdogdu of Turkey in the seventh and final round.

Grandmaster Masoud Mosadeghpour of Iran settled for second with 6.5 points.

Raji Abuazizah of Palestine, Ivan Elishev of Russia, Mohd Hayel Rafee of Syria, Arena Fide Master Safin Safarullakhan of India, Arena Grandmaster Dandel Fernandez of the Philippines, Ahmed Fayez Mustafa of UAE and Muhammed Faizal K T of India were tied at 3rd to 9th places with 6.0 points each while Grandmaster Mert Erdogdu of Turkey led the group of 5.5 pointers that includes Melika Mohammadi of Iran, Rafael Sharon of India, Halder Sanjoy of India, Bryle Arellano of the Philippines, Kanan Namas of UAE and Sabhya Saxena of India.-Marlon Bernardino-
