It's been half a year since the new administration of president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has taken over the reigns of government but the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) chairmanship is still vacant. We learned that sportsman Manolo 'Chino' Trinidad has been considered for the position. We give our full support for Mr. Trinidad to lead the sports regulatory body specially during this time when Philippine boxing is at its nadir.
Chino, as he is fondly called by his peers, has Philippine sports in his blood. He grew up under the tutelage of his illustrious journalist father Recah and has been on both sides of the isle as a broadcaster and as commissioner of the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) and founding member of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP). He also has a stint as a consultant to GAB itself and has covered countless boxing events here and abroad.
Philippine boxing right now is suffering from a drought of boxing events which are the catalyst for boxers, both upcoming and established, to further their careers. The lack of boxing promotions was partly the result of the pandemic but also due to the high cost of promoting an event itself and with other unfavorable circumstances.
One of the key advantages of having Trinidad as GAB chairman is his familiarity and connections within the Philippine television industry. He could probably connect the broadcast industry with local promoters to set up ongoing boxing TV shows and help augment the cost of these promotions. We are glad that the Blow-by-Blow boxing show is back thanks to Manny Pacquiao and Gerry Penalosa, but we need more of these shows to accommodate as many of our boxers as possible.
In the last two decades, the Philippines enjoyed its golden years of boxing, largely due to the nearly superhuman prowess of Manny Pacquiao and a resurgent group of inspired boxers like Nonito Donaire Jr, Donnie Nietes, belatedly Gerry Penalosa, Florante Condes, Rodel Mayol, Johnriel Casimero, Jerwin Ancajas, and others.
Now that the Manny Pacquiao sun has set and other Filipino champions felled, the county is left with no world champion at the moment except for Dave Apolinario who holds the less recognized IBO world title at flyweight. We still have former world champions Casimero, Ancajas, Marlon Tapales and Mark Magsayo and rising contenders Jade Bornea and Reymart Gaballo on the horizon to possibly snatch world titles for the country but by and large the prospect of the country to reclaim its boxing glory in the world stage has never been more dire since before the rise of Pacquiao.
At this point in time, we need the support of our government agencies - specifically, the GAB office, to reignite boxing in our shores. To this end we support Chino Trinidad, as chairman, to lead GAB in helping our boxers reclaim its lost glory in the world stage.
