
Antonio finishes ninth place in Italy

MANILA---FILIPINO Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. secured the ninth place honors in the 30th FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championship 2022 (50+ and 65+ Open-men and women) held at the Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi, Umbria, Italy on Saturday, Nov. 26.
The 13-time Philippine Open champion Antonio collected 7.5 points on six wins, three draws and two losses and settled for the ninth place purse of €700 euro.
Handling the disadvantageous black pieces, the 60-year-old Calapan, Oriental Mindoro native Antonio, whose stint in Italy was being supported by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, Sen. Bong Go and Dr. Joe Balinas, made a quick draw against WGM Elvira Berend of Luxembourg.
Berend is a Kazakhstan-born Luxembourg chess player who holds the FIDE title of Woman Grandmaster. She is a three-time Luxembourg Chess Championship winner and two-time World Senior Chess Championship winner.
Top seed GM Zurab Sturua of Georgia bagged the crown after earning 8.5 points on seven wins, three draws and a loss in the 50 and over division.
Sturua grabbed the championships trophy and Gold medal plus the top prize of € 2,400 euro by virtue of superior tiebreak points, leaving GM Maxim Novik of Lithunia at second place and settle for € 2,000 euro and a Silver medal.
GM Ivan Morovic Fernandez of Chile won the Bronze medal plus the € 1,800 euro in the group of 8.0 pointers that includes GM Vladislav Nevednichy of Romania (fourth, € 1, 500), GM Klaus Bischoff of Germany (fifth,€ 1, 200 ) and IM Fabrizio Bellia of Italy (sixth, € 1, 000).
Completing the 14 places are GM Milos Pavlovic of Serbia (seventh, € 900), GM Frank Holzke of Germany (eight, € 800), IM Uffe Vinter-Schou of Denmark (tenth, € 600), GM Eric Prie of France (eleventh, € 500), GM Dejan Antic of Serbia (twelve, € 400, twelfth), IM William Paschall of the USA (€ 300, thirteenth) and WGM Berend (€ 200, fourteenth). WGM Berend also won Women 50+ award plus € 1,200, Trophy and Gold medal.
Other Filipino entries are International Master Angelo Abundo Young (26th place, 50 and over division) and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad (35th place, 65 over category).
GM Dr. John Nunn of England won the 65 over category gold medal with 9.0 points.
GM Jose Luis Fernandez Garcia of Spain (8.5 points) clinched silver and GM Nikolay A Legky of France (8.5 points) settling for bronze in the FIDE 11-Round Swiss competition.Marlon Bernardino-
