
Harshavardhan G B of India Wins Prestigious Asian Junior Chess Tournament

TAGAYTAY CITY---International Master Harshavardhan G B of India came through with one of his most memorable performances to date as he emerged the standard champion of the Asian Juniors and Girls Chess Championship at the Knights Templar Ridge Hotel in Tagaytay Friday, Nov. 25.
Needing just a draw to seal the title, Harshavardhan G B split the point with International Master Sugar Gan-Erdene of Mongolia in the ninth and final round in claiming his title.
The Chennai bet finished unbeaten with 7.0 points on five victories and four draws to pocket the gold medal.
With the win, Harshavardhan G B received his first of the three grandmaster “norms” required to receive the rank of grandmaster, the top international title in chess, aside from world champion.
To get such a norm, a competitor must achieve grandmaster-level scores during a top-level tournament.
"I am so very happy winning this tough and prestigious chess tournament," said Harshavardhan G B , who won bronze during the 2021 Asian Juniors and Girls Chess Championship in Sri Lanka.
International Michael Concio Jr. of the Philippines defeated International Master IM Saha Neelash of India to receive the silver medal.
Concio, the pride of Dasmariñas City, Cavite also finished unbeaten with 6.5 points on four victories and five draws.
Gan-Erdene, on the other hand, took third with 6.0 points.
Gan-Erdene won the bronze medal after the tie break points was applied.
Also with 6.0 points were fourth Chatterjee Utsab of India, fifth Eric Labog Jr. of the Philippines, sixth International Master Raahul V S of India and seventh Fide Master Arman Hakemi of Iran.
Labog, who loss to Harshavardhan G B in the Thursday's eight round got a consolation prize.
Labog already earn his International Master title after breaking the 2200 barrier.
Completing the top ten with 5.5 points each were eight, Internationa Master Saha Neelash of India, ninth Fide Master Daniyal Sapenov of Kazakhstan and tenth National Master Mark Jay Bacojo of the Philippines.
In the Girls' section, Woman International Master Ngoc Thuy Duong Bach of Thailand (7.5 points) won the gold, followed by silver medallist Woman International Master Ravi Rakshitta of India (7.0 points) and bronze medallist Woman International Master Amina Kairbekova of Kazakhstan (6.0 points).
Thirty two boys from eleven countries are competing the junior division while 20 players are participating in the 9-round Swiss system tournament among the girls. The championship is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines on behalf of the Asian Chess Federation.-Marlon Bernardino-
