
Young wins, Antonio falters

MANILA---International Master Angelo Abundo Young trounced Fide Master Milan Kolesar of Slovakia in the 7th round Tuesday to climb to a twenty one-way tie for 19th place in the 30th FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championship (50+ and 65+ Open-men and women) held at the Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi, Umbria, Italy.
With the win, the 59-year-old Young, padded his total to 4.5 points, the same output of countryman Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. in the 50 years old and above category of the 11-round, Swiss system tournament.
The 60-year-old Antonio, suffered his second straight loss at the hands of tournament top seed Grandmaster Zurab Sturua of Georgia.
Young will slug it out Fide Master Nicola Paglietti of Italy while Antonio will meet International Master Markus Loeffler of Germany in Wednesday's 8th round.
Grandmaster Ivan Morovic Fernandez of Chile defeated Grandmaster Milos Pavlovic of Serbia to climb to 1st to 3rd places along with Grandmaster Darcy Lima of Brazil and Grandmaster Frank Holzke who agreed a draw. The trio joint the top spot with 6.0 points each in seven outings.
Sturua, on the other hand, raised his total 5.5 points, the same score of Grandmaster Maxim Novik of Lithuania, Grandmaster Dejan Antic of Serbia and International Master Fabrizio Bellia of Italy.
Meanwhile, in the 65 years old and above category, International Master elect and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad beat Olav Thoresen of Norway to score 4.0 points.
Bagamasbad will face Julio Santos of Portugal in the next round.
Top pick Grandmaster Dr. John Nunn still on top with 6.5 points, half a point ahead of solo second place Grandmaster Jens Kristiansen of Denmark with 6.0 points.
Nunn nipped International Master Nathan Birnboim of Israel while Kristiansen score his five straight wins against Fide Master Jaroslav Mojzis of Czech Republic.
Kristiansen only loss to Bagamasbad in the second round.-Marlon Bernardino-
