GM Joey Antonio to play in the 30th FIDE World Senior Chess Championship

MANILA---FILIPINO Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Joey” Madrigal Antonio Jr. is set to compete in the 30th FIDE World Senior Chess Championship which begins on Tuesday at the conference center of the Cenacolo Hotel/Casa Leonori in Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, Umbria, Italy.
The 13th seed Antonio (elo rating of 2397) bagged the runner-up trophy in the 2017 edition in Italy five years ago.
Backed up by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. , Sen. Bong Go, Col. Jaime Osit Santos and Bayanihan Chess Club Co-Founding Chairman Dr. Joe Balinas, the 60-years-old Mr. Antonio, who holds the record 13-time Philippine Open Champion, will try to surpass his runner-up finish in the 27th World Senior Chess Championship 2017 (50+) held in Acqui Terme, Italy in 2017. Grandmaster Julio Granda Zúñiga of Peru won the said chessfest.
The competition features 50+ and 65+ age categories in both Open and women divisions. The champion will receive a trophy, gold medal and cash prize.
Top seed is GM Zurab Sturua of Georgia who holds an elo rating of 2522 while the Second seed was GM Henrik Danielsen of Iceland who possessed an elo rating of 2514.
“I’m ready. It’s a big challenge for me, but I will do my very best for flag and country,” said Mr. Antonio, who topped the RSM Tun Mustapha Championship Tawau held on September 17-18 in Sabah, Malaysia, his first international over the board tournament this year.
Mr. Antonio is a veteran of 11 Chess Olympiads. He has competed in the Asian Individual Chess Championship six times and the Asian Team Chess Championships five times. He also joined the FIDE World Cup in 1999.
Mr. Antonio, who won the team silver medal with Eugene Torre, Wesley So, John Paul Gomez and Darwin Laylo in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
Mr. Antonio was born in Sta. Mesa, Manila. He studied at University of Manila.
Currently, Mr. Antonio is a resident of Quezon City who hails from Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
Mr. Antonio is the top player of PCAP's Iloilo Kisela Knights which owned by sportsman Mr. Leo Sotaridona.-Marlon Bernardino-
