Canino, Paquinol rule Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship 2022

MANILA---FILIPINA chessers, led by Woman National Master (WNM) Ruelle “Tawing” Canino and Ashzley Aya Nicole Paquinol of Cagayan de Oro City ruled the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship 2022 combined G12 & G14 Blitz competition on Wednesday, Nov.9 at the Asia Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.

The 14-year-old Canino, a Grade 9 student of Far Eastern University-Diliman, playing under the guidance of Grandmaster Jayson O. Gonzales, won the gold in the 14-under girls’ individual event competition.

Canino swept all her opponents to finish with a perfect 9.0 points.

Daren Dela Cruz of Dasmarinas City, Cavite, the pride of Rep. Pidi Barzaga Jr. and national coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas came in second for the silver while Richily Evans Cuizon of Cagayan de Oro City wound up third for the bronze.

Canino (9 pts.), Dela Cruz (8 pt.s) and Cuizon (6 pts.) amassed 23 points for the team gold.

The 11-year-old Paquinol, a Grade 6 student of Capito University Basic Education Department, playing under the banner of CDO mayor Rolando "Klarex" Adlao Uy and Fide Master Nelson Villanueva took the silver in the 12-under girls’ individual event competition.
Jemaicah Yap Mendoza of Romblon also won the silver. Paquinol and Mendoza, both tallied 4.5 points.

Rosli Ain Insyirah of Malaysia won the gold with similar 4.5 points (higher tie break points).

Paquinol and Yap amassed 9.0 points for the team gold.
The Philippine chess team campaign would be possible with the support of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and the Philippine Sports Commission.-Marlon Bernardino-
