MANILA--Remegio Galenzoga III scored a crucial win over Jimmy Ty Jr.in the seventh and final round to claim the championship of the Ormoc City 75th Charter Day Regional Chess tournament held recently in Ormoc City, Leyte last Oct. 29.

After back to back draws to Rosendo Yamyamin in the fifth round and Norman Jasper Montejo in the sixth and penultimate round, Galenzoga bounced back with aplomb to down Ty in his last assignment.

That was all Galenzoga needed to nail the title with the highest output of 6.0 points. He pocketed P10,000 for his efforts in this event, jointly organized by Kamatyas and Ormoc City Chess Club, applying 15 minutes with 5 seconds increment time control format.
Montejo, on the other hand, figured in a five way tie with Pedro Tidoy, Mervin Merelos, NM Rodolfo Rodolfo Jr. and Rafael Sim with similar 5.5 points but Tidoy settled for the second place honors by virtue of a higher tie-breaker.

Rounding up the top 10 finishers were Michael Torion, Jude Marluc Aranaydo, Yamyamin and Ty.

Meanwhile, International Master Roderick Nava swept all his matches in a rare 20 boards simultaneous chess exhibition. Asia's First Grandmaster/ World Chess Hall of Famer Eugene Torre, tallied 18 wins and 2 draws against Yamyamin and Aranaydo.-Marlon Bernardino-
