MANILA---Asia’s first Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre will make an appearance as the guest speaker in the formal opening of the Invitational Chess Tournament in Honor of 94-year-old Tatay Domeng Santos, oldest player of Marikina Chess Community on Nov. 6, Sunday at the Marikina Riverside Gazeebo.
Torre, the founding president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), is expected to encourage participants in the grassroots competition to continue to play the sport.
He may also share his secrets of his rise as one of the world’s top players during his time.
Marikina Chess Federation (MCF) president Johnny "Joel" Gaudia, who organized the chess tournament, said Torre was the perfect choice as guest speaker. “Most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol,” Gaudia said.
