
Laguna, PECA continue winning run in PCAP

SARDINIA, ITALY---Laguna Heroes and Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) Executives continue their winning run in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines Third Conference with a sweep of their Saturday night assignments.
The Heroes opened the evening with a 14-7 domination of Tacloban before following it up with a 12-7 beating of Palawan to stay on top of Northern Division standings with a 12-4 slate.
PECA Executives led by NM Jasper Rom, CM Arjie Bayangat, Sarah Mae Chua, Atty. Melzar Galicia, IA James Infiesto, Leonard Reyes and AGM Rey Reyes on the other hand, edged Quezon City, 11-10, and Isabela, 12-9, in order.
"We are happy that the Laguna Heroes Team played without defaults tonight. Winning another twin victories against Tacloban and Palawan is indeed morale-boasting," said ACM Michella Concio, board 3 and Assistant Coach of Laguna Heroes.
Former 2-time Asian Junior Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr., Michella Concio, newly installed International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad and Vince Angelo Medina spearheaded the waxing hot Laguna start in the blitz category, 5-2.
Barcenilla dismantled Melvin Merelos, Concio subdued Judy Ann Mesias, Bagamasbad, who is fresh from winning the over 65 category of the World Seniors Chess Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, trounced Eladio Lim III while Medina routed Norman Jasper Montejo.
Laguna Heroes backed up by Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO and Greatech Philippines, Inc., Engr. Billy Joe Ereňo of Costbusters Philippines Corp. and Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods, crushed Tacloban, 9-5, in the rapid play.
GM Barcenilla, GM John Paul Gomez, Bagamasbad and Medina is the hero of Laguna against Palawan.
Barcenilla outpointed IM Barlo Nadera, Gomez smashed Woman International Master-elect Shania Mae Mendoza, Bagamasbad dealt Woman National Master Carmelita Abanes and Medina walloped National Master Carlo Lorena to led Laguna into a 4-3 score in the blitz category.
Laguna also won in the rapid play, with an 8-4 demolition against Palawan.-Marlon Bernardino-
