GM Darwin Laylo rules 5th edition of Kamatyas chess tilt

SARDINIA, ITALY--- Grandmaster Darwin Laylo emerged victorious in the 5th edition of Kamatyas Fide Rated Invitational Rapid Chess Tournament held at the 3rd Floor, Bldg. B, SM Sucat in Paranaque City on Saturday.

The 42-year-old Laylo, a member of the Philippine Army chess team that saw action in the recent AFP-PNP-PCG Chess Olympics, finished undefeated with six wins and three draws with a total 7.5 points output to snare the champion’s purse amounting to P30,000 while reclaiming the title as the fastest Filipino chesser today.

International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia wound up second with similar 7.5 points and P10,000 while Fide Master Narquingden Reyes and Kevin Arquero were third and fourth with 7.0 points apiece to pocket P7,000 and P5,000, respectively.

Rounding up to the top 10 who received P2,000 each in the 1-day event hosted by Sir David Almirol and International Master Roderick Nava, both co-founding head of Kamatyas Chess Club are Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio Jr. (fifth, 7 pts.), National Master Mark Jay Bacojo (sixth, 7 pts.), International Master Michael Concio Jr. (seventh, 6.5 pts.), National Master Prince Mark Aquino (eight, 6.5 pts.), Chester Neil Reyes (ninth, 6.5 pts.) and International Master Daniel Quizon (tenth, 6.5 pts.).-Marlon Bernardino-
