
FIDE Master Alekhine Fabiosa Nouri pull off another Houdini act

SARDINIA, ITALY---FIDE Master Alekhine Fabiosa Nouri of the Philippines came through with another Houdini act, after halving the points with Yegor Stolyarsky of Israel in the third round of the World Junior Chess Championship 2022 late Thursday at the Cala Gonone in Sardinia, Italy.
The 79th seeded Nouri (Elo 2251) salvaged a draw against 106th seed Stolyarsky (Elo 1987) in 103 moves of Scotch Opening using the white pieces.
"I asked the arbiter for a 50-move draw ruling," said the 16-year-old Nouri, a Grade 10 student of La Concepcion College, City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan whose European chess campaign is being supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines chiarman/president Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr., NCFP CEO GM Jayson O. Gonzales, NCFP Vice President for Visayas Rep. Neri Javier Colmenares, NCFP Vice President for Mindanao Sen. Manny Pacquiao, Philippine Sports Commission led by chairman Jose Emmanuel "Noli" M. Eala, commissioner Olivia "Bong" Coo and executive secretary Atty. Guillermo B. Iroy Jr., Philippine Olympic Committee president and Tagaytay city mayor Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. the office of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Jaime Victor B. Ledda, Fide delegate Casto "Toti" Abundo of the Asian Chess Federation, Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI) President & General Manager Ronald Daniel Ricaforte Mascariñas, Buena Viel Construction and Project Management top honcho Engr. Jojo Buenaventura and Senator Mark Villar.
Nouri managed to escape with a draw despite quality down in the middle game and pawn down in the end game.
Last Wednesday, Nouri drew with 19th seed Grandmaster (GM) Felix Blohberger of Austria (Elo 2493) in 65 moves of the Rossolimo Attack Variation-Sicilian Defense using the white pieces.
However, Nouri yielded to 23rd seed International Master Gorshtein (Elo 2471) of Israel in the second round Thursday afternoon session handling the black pieces.
Meanwhile, Woman National Master Mhage Gerriahlou F. Sebastian (Elo 1865) bounced back after beating Pilar Silvera (Elo 1470) of Uruguay.
The 16-year-old Sebastian, a Grade 12 student of Far Eastern University-Diliman, Quezon City, the pride of Flora, Apayao bowed to Woman Fide Master Michalina Rudzinska (Elo 2259) of Poland and Dimitra Lydia Daniilidi (Elo 1498) of Greece, respectively.
Nouri and Sebastian are joined in Italy by National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. and Susan Grace Tana Neri, who serve as their coaches.-Marlon Bernardino-
