Eder Jofre, one of only 7 retired fighters since 1892 who have won the bantamweight and featherweight crowns, has died according to his son Marcel by way of electronic messenger.

Andrea Jofre, his daughter, wanted to share this heartfelt post: “Dear fans, friends & family…It is with great sorrow to inform you that my father Eder Jofre, our beloved Golden Rooster, all-time Boxing World Tri-Champion has passed away at the age of 86 and left us this morning around 2:20. May God receive you with open arms and comfort our hearts.”

Members of the boxing community paid their respects to the legendary fighter who was recently recognized by the West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame last October 2021.

Last year, he was feted by fellow legends like Sugar Ray Leonard, Michael Nunn, Carlos Zarate in a series of meet-and-greet functions capped by a trip to the site where he won his first world crown---the famed Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.

“Exactly 50 weeks ago today, we inducted the great world champion Eder Jofre into the West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame. I've just learned he has died at age 86. We are heart broken and thankful that we had a chance to honor this all-time great and say, "Thank you for the memories". My condolences to Marcel Jofre, Andrea Jofre and his entire family. Eder Jofre will live forever in the West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame. Rest in peace, Dascanse em paz, Eder Jofre,” stated Rick Farris, President and Founder of the prestigious West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame.

“Rest in Peace, Eder Jofre. Today, the world lost not only a great athlete but a great person,” lamented Chris Smith, author of the compelling book Eder Jofre: Brazil’s First Boxing World Champion.

“Rest in Peace to Brazil’s greatest world champion Boxer Eder Jofre. I am very humbled to be with him last year when he visited me together with Mexico’s boxing legend Carlos Zarate on my birthday art exhibit in Loews Hotel Santa Monica Beach in October 2021. I sketched them both live and I gave him a painting of Santa Monica Beach I did on that day. A very sad news but all of us someday will meet our creator. Thank you, West Coast Boxing Hall of Fame, Rick Farris and writer Chris Smith and the Jofre family,” Jun Aquino, renowned painter and Filipino artist expressed.

“It is with great sadness that I received the news that Eder Jofre passed away. This made me reflect on the importance of honoring our idols during life, and not just after they are gone. Luckily, I was able to meet him in 2018, give him a boot and got emotional. Like I said on the occasion, l'm a crybaby, but he's a great idol and made a great effort to find me. Today again I feel emotional. Thanks for everything, Golden Rooster (Gallo de ouro).’

Notes:

On behalf of Mr. Jofre’s fans and friends here at PhilBoxing.com and the Philippine Boxing Historical Society, we offer our condolences to his friends and family.
