Bayawan's Inigo clinches back-to-back chess titles

MANILA---Bayawan City's chess genius Michael Jan Stephen "Bonbon" Rosalem Inigo added another title - in a week-long span - by snaring the High School category diadem in the Pamplona Fiesta - 1st Yamog Chess Festival on Saturday, October 1, 2022 held at the Municipal covered court, Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

The 14 years old Inigo, a Grade 9 student of Bayawan City Science and Technology Education Center (BCSTEC), stayed unbeaten in the six-round Swiss System format chess tournament. He tallied 5.5 points, outclassing group of five pointers that includes Adam Yerk Ebro, Raphael Iyas, SJ Karjakin Quilantang, Raiza Lavigne Joy Eraga and Abby Vale Ebro who placed second to sixth placers, respectively, in the event supported by Mayor Janice Degamo and Council, organized by Negros Club 64 in cooperation with the Little Kingsmen chess family.

Equally impressive result was turned in by Dauin's fast rising star Markley Partosa by ruling the Elementary category and Engr. Juh Mhar Dalleda the topping exclusive Pamplona event. Tournament Director was Al Dennis Aninon while Chief and Supervising Arbiters IO/NA Mart Olendo and Bobby Torres with 125 Participants, spread into 3 categories.

It shall be recalled that Inigo won the 17-under Boys category with a time control of 25 Minutes Plus 5 Seconds Increment of the Governor Bong Lacson Invitational Chess Cup Negros Occidental vs Negros Oriental 17 & Under Boys Chess Tournament held at Provincial Capitol, 3rd Floor, Social Hall in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

Inigo is schedule to participate in the 6th Eastern Asia (ASEAN) Youth Chess Championship to be held on November 4 to 13, 2022 in in Bangkok, Thailand.-Marlon Bernardino-
