NM Velarde bags 2nd Chess title

MANILA---National Master Jerish John Velarde bagged his 2nd title in the Philippine chess circuit by topping the International Arbiter/National Master Wilfredo Neri 2nd Memorial Chess Cup online tournament held at Tornelo platform on Thursday, September 29, 2022.

Finishing with seven wins and two draws in nine rounds, the pride of Imus City, Cavite accumulated 8.0 points to claim the title plus the top purse of P3,000 in the five minutes plus three seconds increment time control format in commemorating the 2nd Death Anniversary of the late International Arbiter, FIDE Instructor and National Master Wilfredo Neri of Aklan, founder and first president of Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation Inc., former Deputy Executive Director for Visayas and former Vice President for Visayas of Professional Chess Trainers Association of the Philippines.

NM Velarde, a Grade 10 student of St. Martha Montessori School in Imus City, playing under the guidance of Imus City mayor Alex "AA" Advincula, Congressman AJ Advincula and CFMI - JJM Construction scored victories over International Master Ricardo de Guzman in the first round, Marlon Laguador in the second round, Fide Master Roel Abelgas in the third round, Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. in the fourth round, Woman National Master Francois Magpily in the sixth round, Fide Master Alekhine Nouri in the seventh round and International Master Barlo Nadera in the eight and penultimate round.

He split the point with International Master Richelieu Salcedo III in the fifth round and International Master Michael Concio Jr. in the ninth and final round.

NM Velarde, who grew up in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu is fresh from winning the over the board chess tournament dubbed as National Youth and Schools Chess Championships Under-17 Open Grand Finals held at the Dapitan City Cultural Complex in Zamboanga del Norte last September 22.

NM Velarde was born in Imus City, Cavite. He now represents his hometown, Imus City, Cavite in the upcoming 6th Eastern Asia (ASEAN) Youth Chess Championship to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 4 to 13, 2022.-Marlon Bernardino-
