
GM Antonio banners 8-player PEZA rapid chess championship

MANILA---GRANDMASTER (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. will try to live up to his reputation as the country’s chess ironman as he spearheads an 8-player field in the Rapid Chess Championships to be held on September 30, 2022 (Friday) at the Double Dragon Center West Building, DD Meridian Park, Diosdado Macapagal Blvd, Pasay City.
Antonio, 60, is currently competing in the MRSM Tun Mustapha Chess Championship 2022 being held at the SRI IXORA Hall, MRSM Tun, Mustapha, Tawau in Sabah, Malaysia.
The 13-time National Open Champion Antonio will be playing in the Group A division that includes Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, 8-time Illinois (USA) champion International Master Angelo Abundo Young and International Master Petronio Roca, a former engineer here in PEZA.
Also plunging into battle in Group B division are Fide Master Alekhine Fabiosa Nouri, Fide Master Robert Suelo Jr., National Master Jasper Faeldonia and candidate master Genghis Katipunan Imperial.
The Time control format is 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment in the event hosted by Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Officer-In-Charge Director General Mr. Tereso "Theo" O. Panga, in partnership with JC Premiere Marikina Business Center.
Tournament Director is National Master and United States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. assisted by National Master Romeo Alcodia and Noel Jay "Super B" Estacio.
The tournament (Group A) offers P10,000 to the champion, P7,000 to the runner-up, P5,000 to the third-placer and P3,000 to the fourth placer.
The top four finishers in Group B will likewise to receive P7,000, P5,000, P4,000 and P3,000 respectively.-Marlon Bernardino-
