GM Balinas, Barangay San Isidro chessers off to strong start in Tuna Festival

MANILA---The GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. chess team routed Antipolo City, Rizal chess team and The Mind Movers chess team to a share of the lead after two rounds in the Sen. Manny Pacquiao Tuna Festival Chess Team Tournament held at the Robinsons Place in General Santos City over the weekend.

Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and Michael Jan Stephen Rosalem Inigo delivered the twin wins in the 2-1 demolition of the GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. chess team against the Antipolo City, Rizal chess team in the first round.

The 13-time Philippine Open Champion Antonio, playing black, won over Fide Master Christopher Castellano of the London System skirmish while Inigo downed Sonny dela Rosa in another London System.

Genghis Katipunan Imperial toppled Drigo Teves of Irregular Opening to prevent a possible shut out loss of the Antipolo City, Rizal chess team in the event back up by Extreme Gaming, Luminuex Glutathione Capsule and businessman Changsuk Lyu, organized by United States chess master Rodolfo "Jun" Panopio Jr.

In the second round, Antonio crushed National Master Jojo Aquino of French defense. Teves handed the black pieces and held a draw with Rodney Opada in a London System Opening. Inigo, secured the key draw with Vic Artieda to put the team in a favorable 2-1 score.

The GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. chess team is supported by Dr. Joe Carreon Balinas, Engr. Antonio Carreon Balinas and Mam Jeanshen Rosalem.

Meanwhile, Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal Chess Team of Kapitana Mayet Hernandez represented by Joshua Michael Yongco, Esmael Abas and Marc G. Simborio split the point with Senator Manuel Pacquiao chess team, 1.5-1.5, in the first round then routed Kc3 Akatsuki chess team, 2-1, in the second round.-Marlon Bernardino-
