
Eugene Torre to grace Marinduque chess

MANILA, Philippines – Asia’s first Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre will make an appearance as the guest speaker in the formal opening of the 2nd Marinduque Rapid Chess Tournament on August 20 at the Boac Covered Court, Boac, Marinduque.
Torre, the founding president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), is expected to encourage participants in the grassroots competition to continue to play the sport.
He may also share his secrets of his rise as one of the world’s top players during his time.
Engr. Lauro Bautista, President of Boac Knight Chess Club, Inc. who organized the tournament alongside with Marinduque Sports Office, said Torre was the perfect choice as guest speaker. “Most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol,” Engr. Bautista said. The event will feature Open Division and Kiddies Category, and will apply time control of 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment per player. The participants must be members of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines. The competition starts at 8:00 a.m.
The tournament offers P5,000 to the open champion, P3,000 to the runner-up, P2,000 to the third-placer, P1,000 to the fourth placer and P700 for the fifth-placer. Category winners in the lady, senior and junior will get P700 each.
Meanwhile, the first, second, third, fourth and fifth placers in the kiddies, will likewise to receive P2,000, P1,500, P1,000, P700 and P500, respectively.
Top lady in the kiddies bracket as well the top under 12, top under 10 and top under 8, will earn P500 each. Registration fee is pegged at P200 for the open while free for the kiddies.- Marlon Bernardino-
