
FIDE Gives Highest Award to Tolentino

MANILA---Abraham “Bambol” N. Tolentino Jr. was conferred as Honorary Member by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) at its Congress concurrent with the Chess Olympiad last week in Chennai, India, for his “special contribution to the world of chess.”
It is the highest honor given by FIDE General Assembly, one of the largest international sports organizations with 195 member nations.
Tolentino had served FIDE as General Secretary after being President of FIDE Southeast Asian Zone. He has long served as General Secretary of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines since the turn of the millennium.
FIDE recognized his service and accomplishment as President of the Philippine Olympic Committee. Tolentino is lifetime president of the SEA Games Federation.
Other awardees in Chennai were Prof. Kurt Jungwirth of Austria, European Chess Union President from 1990-1998 and Jorge Vega of Mexico, American Confederation President from 2002-2022, GM
Vlastimil Hort of Germany and GM Slim Bouaziz of Tunisia.
Tolentino is a three term Congressman from the 8 th district of Cavite, three term Councilor of Tagaytay City, three term and current Mayor of Tagaytay City.
He is a Past Grand Master of the Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines.-Marlon Bernardino-
