The Laguna Heroes took care of their last elimination match against the Quezon City Simba's Tribe, 12-9, and are headed to the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) playoffs as the no. 4 seed in the Northern division virtually held at Chess.com Platform on Wednesday night.

Fresh off a sweeping back-to-back PCAP game day last Saturday night against Isabela, 19-2, and Rizal, 12-9, the Heroes continued to roll after taking down the Simba's Tribe.

"After winning massively in blitz, the team became complacent. As a result, Quezon City immediately took a big lead in the rapid with 4-8 score in 6 boards, I would like to thank FM (Jose EFren) Bagamasbad for showing his mastery in the endgame to win his game against Mr. (Danilo) Ponay. The win saved the Laguna Heroes," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO and Greatech Philippines, Inc., Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods and Engr. Antonio Balinas of AC Balinas Construction and Steel Works.

“We are happy with wins tonight. All games were exciting until the endgames.” he added.

Laguna immediately grabbed the early lead, 6-1, in the first seven playing boards of the blitz game courtesy of two-time Asian Junior champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr., Woman National Master Karen Jean Enriquez, Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Vince Angelo Medina, Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo and Richie Jocson.

However, during the rapid category, Quezon City bounced back and finally picked up their momentum when National Master Robert Arellano, Ricky Echala, Kristian Paulo Cristobal and Joseph Navarro gave them with an impressive 8-0 record.

Laguna clawed their way back into the lead column and spearheaded a momentum-boosting three-board winning streak led by Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, Michella Concio and Bagamasbad.

Despite Quezon City's 8-6 wins in the rapid category, the Heroes proved to be the edge that secured their no.4 spot in their division after a 12-9 victory over Simba's Tribe.

Thanks to the last board win delivered by Bagamasbad against Quezon City Simba's Tribe Playing Team Owner Danilo Ponay.
The Heroes ended their regular season with 425 points, 21 wins and 13 losses, ahead of Manila’s 404.5 points in the Northern division.

Iloilo is still the no. 1 team of the conference with 518 tallied points while the Pasig placed second overall 500.5 points.-Marlon Bernardino-
