Barcenilla, Fisabilillah, Young power Laguna past Manila in PCAP chess tilt

MANILA---Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla, Woman International Master Ummi Fisabilillah and International Master Angelo Young powered the Laguna Heroes to a 15-6 victory over a GM Guillermo Colman Vasquez-led Manila Indios Bravos chess team in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Wednesday night, July 13 virtually held at Chess.com Platform.

Barcenilla, a many-time Battle of the GMs champion, defeated National Master Rolando Andador in 28 moves of English Opening, Anglo Dutch Defense while Young, an eight-time Illinois USA Champion edged Dr. Jenny Mayor in 36 moves of Sicilian defense, Alapin variation and Fisabilillah trounced Woman Candidate Master Mira Mirano in 53 moves of Modern defense.

Backed up by Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice Foods and AC Balinas Construction and Steel Works, also delivering for Laguna in the rapid event were Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo, Christian Nanola and draws by Vince Angelo Medina.

Lorenzo subdued Alji Cantonjos in 48 moves of London System Opening, while Nanola crushed Candidate Master Genghis Katipunan Imperial in 43 moves of Queens Pawn Opening and Medina split the point with International Master Ronald Dableo in 23 moves of Trompovsky Opening.

GM Guillermo Colman Vasquez provided the full point for Manila after beating Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus in 51 moves of Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack, Classical variation.

"We are happy for beating Cagayan and Manila tonight. Both of them are really strong teams. We are hoping that Laguna Heroes will continue their fine performance as we are nearing playoffs." said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO and Greatech Philippines, Inc., Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods and Engr. Antonio Balinas of AC Balinas Construction and Steel Works.

After their blitz encounter ended in a 4-3 triumph in favor of Laguna, Barcenilla struck the hardest in dominating the rapid phase, 11-3, and claiming the win.

Laguna, earlier beat Cagayan Kings with a similar 15-6 victory.
After winning in the blitz category, 6-1, Laguna nipped Cagayan, 9-5, in the rapid event. Fisabilillah scored 6/6 Wednesday night.-Marlon Bernardino-
